Egyl, The Fortress

This page may contain spoilers regarding Broken Aether.

Egyl serves as a dedicated frontline tank, specializing in physical damage mitigation and high survivability. His attribute distribution emphasizes durability - particularly high maximum HP - allowing him to absorb sustained damage and maintain battlefield presence during prolonged encounters.

Egyl has access to abilities that draw enemy focus, providing widespread aggro control across multiple targets. Unlike single-target threat tools, these abilities apply taunt effects to all enemies, making him well-suited to managing incoming damage for the party. His kit also includes multiple forms of self-healing and damage reduction, enabling him to maintain his role without requiring constant external support.

His defensive orientation makes him effective as a primary tank regardless of party composition or encounter type, though he remains particularly strong against physical threats. He can be positioned strategically to respond to enemy aggression early in combat, especially when combined with party members who can act sooner to initiate swaps or support effects.

Due to his low Agility, Egyl may not always act early in turn order. However, he can be positioned in reserve and swapped in at the start of battle by linking him to a faster character, enabling him to establish aggro control sooner when necessary.

Strengths

  • Fits the typical tank archetype: very sturdy and hard to take down.

  • Highest HP and DEF.

  • Average ATK.

  • Has plenty of abilities and passives to increase Hate generation.

  • Ultra Move makes party immune to physical damage.

  • Amazing self-sustain and survivability.

Weaknesses

  • Has the lowest MND, making him a poor tank for fights versus magical users.

  • Second lowest TP and AGI.

  • Very poor personal damage.

Baseline

  • Attention!: area-of-effect taunt. Combine it with certain passives (such as Warcry) to make enemies focus on him right off the bat, since he has low AGI.

  • Load Gunspear: make his Hate generation more reliable.

  • Cover / Shield All: makes Egyl take damage for his allies instead. Can be combined with the Shield Ally passive for increased effect.

  • Whirlwind Spear: excellent area-of-effect ability to keep enemies focused on Egyl.

  • Comrades' Help: increases all healing done to Egyl, no matter the source.

Class Abilities

  • Ether Sucker: from Vampire. Useful on all characters.

  • Drunken Master: from Monk. Works fine equipped on any character, and since Egyl is painfully slow, it's a pretty decent filler ability.

Crystals

  • SOS HP / DEF Up: this works pretty well with Iron Will as it'll guarantee a proc while ensuring he survives.

  • HP Drain: very straightforward. The amount seems to scale with damage done, so the harder you hit, the more you heal.

Mid Game

When Egyl joins the party, he typically has access to multiple tiers of defensive abilities that allow him to establish aggro control and absorb damage reliably. Mid-game skill upgrades expand his ability to maintain enemy focus, improve durability, and reinforce his role as a primary tank during extended encounters.

Development during this stage often prioritizes enhancing survivability - such as increasing maximum health and defensive attributes - alongside abilities that improve threat generation and damage mitigation. This ensures Egyl can consistently draw and maintain enemy attacks while reducing pressure on other party members.

Class Emblems available during this period can supplement his defensive scaling or broaden secondary utility, depending on party composition. Emblems that improve health, defensive attributes, or general resilience align naturally with his role as a frontline protector.

End Game

In the late game, Egyl gains access to advanced defensive abilities that further strengthen his capacity to absorb damage and support the party. These skills enhance mitigation, resource sustain, and team protection, allowing him to maintain significant durability even during high-intensity encounters.

His progression at this stage typically involves refining defensive stats, improving threat control, and reinforcing abilities that allow him to remain active without requiring constant external healing. Additional tools may also provide group protection or team-based defensive benefits, enabling coordinated defensive strategies.

Late-game Class Emblems allow Egyl to specialize further, improving durability, reducing resource costs, or supporting hybrid defensive scaling depending on intended build direction. These options support both pure tanking and more utility-oriented configurations.

End-game equipment can enhance his performance by increasing defensive attributes, improving resource economy, or supporting threat-generation mechanics. These choices allow players to tailor his role based on encounter demands, whether focused on absorbing physical damage, supporting longer battles, or maintaining consistent aggro control.
